Lightning Protection Survey and Upgrades (Defence Sites) (2023-2024)

Military installations span diverse regions and demand absolute operational continuity. LPI safeguards personnel, equipment and mission readiness, from command centres and weapons storage to surveillance networks and naval vessels.

The risk
Defence sites face compounding risks: operational disruption, financial impact, and direct threats to security. Protection must be engineered for zero-tolerance environments.
Command centres, weapons storage, and fuel depots where a lightning-induced fire or equipment failure has unacceptable consequences.
Communication, surveillance and weaponry systems degrade under induced transients, compromising both capability and intelligence.
Operators working in exposed outdoor environments need reliable warning of impending strikes and clearly defined safety protocols.
Uninterrupted operations are non-negotiable. Every protection layer is designed to preserve readiness even during severe storms.

The Solution
Select a marker on the scene to explore the risk at that point and how LPI's comprehensive solutions are tailored to mitigate risks, and fortify assets and operation against lightning's destructive force.

Protection Plan
Well-designed systems protect people, infrastructure and automation together, never in isolation.
Protect critical assets against direct lightning strikes.
Protect equipment against incoming surges and transients.
Provide a low impedance reference earth and bond all conductive elements to minimise voltage differences.

The Department of Defence commissioned us to conduct a lightning protection survey of the communications infrastructure and existing lightning protection systems at four different locations across Australia. Our consultants and channel partners conducted thorough surveys and performed gap analyses. Based on the assessment, we designed lightning protection systems adhering to relevant standards. The tailored solutions provided to the Client, involving direct-strike and surge protection along with earthing and bonding in some cases, were implemented by our channel partners to the standards required by the Client.
